Our Story

Our history here in Denton and where God is leading us.

The Denton Church of the Nazarene was founded on January 21, 1941, by Reverend Lemuel Savage. Initially, the congregation met in a rented building, formerly a sewing factory, located at the back of West Denton. This continued for the first Sunday and the next sixteen years. In 1957, the Denton Cemetery Association put up a house for sale on Route 404, across from the Denton cemetery. The congregation purchased this house and converted it into their church. By 1965, the church community had grown, necessitating the construction of a new edifice made from white concrete blocks next to the original house. This new building served the congregation until they outgrew it.

In 1972, the church acquired additional land for a new building and settled on a three-and-a-half-acre plot on Route 313, north of Denton. By July 11, 1976, a modern brick church was dedicated. In 1985, under Senior Pastor Shaffer's leadership, the church expanded, adding a fellowship hall and more classrooms on the upper level. In 2003, during Pastor Hal Parry's tenure, the sanctuary was remodeled. As the congregation grew, another classroom was added near the Fellowship Hall, and the nursery was enlarged. Since 2012, Senior Pastor Rev. Paul Merritt and his family have joined us. With their arrival, we purchased the neighboring property and are in the process of converting the existing house into a youth center for our teenagers.
