A Message from Pastor George Fry
Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.
Last month in the newsletter I shared some options for daily Bible readings and some suggestions for daily devotionals. In this newsletter I want to share with you some resources that are available to you if you would like to go deeper in your study of the Bible. These suggestions are also very helpful if you teach Sunday School or lead a Bible study.
Two sources that are on the internet are
The Blue Letter Bible: https://www.blueletterbible.org/
and Bible Gateway: https://www.biblegateway.com/
The Blue Letter Bible you will find different Bible versions, Cross references, commentaries and dictionaries. The resource on this site that I like the most is the Interlinear section. An interlinear Bible shows the Scripture written in English along with the original Hebrew in the Old Testament and Greek in the New Testament. I have found it most helpful to get a deeper meaning from the Scriptures by looking at the meanings of words used in the original language in which they were written in. The Bible Gateway site includes reading plans and some commentaries that you can use.
One of the Bible Study programs that I use in The Sword Searcher: https://www.swordsearcher.com/. This downloadable program cost about $70. This program includes of 40 Bible commentaries, 16 versions of the Bible, and numerous resources to help with your Bible Study. I have found the folks that run this program to be very helpful when I needed assistance. They will occasionally run special sales where you can buy 5 of these programs at one time for a discounted price.
There are some publishing companies that I use to buy other resources. The Church of the Nazarene publishing company, The Foundry: https://www.thefoundrypublishing.com/ is a good place to buy commentaries. Most of these commentaries are excellent. I have come across a couple the I was disappointed in.
Our sister denominations also have publishing houses that offer good commentaries and Bible Study guides. The Free Methodist Church’s Publishing House: https://freemethodistbooks.com/ and the Wesleyan Publishing House: https://wphstore.com/
An excellent book to start going deeper in the Scriptures in Through the Bible, A Complete Old & New Testament Bible Study by Patricia J. David: https://secure.wesleyan.org/936/through-the-bible-a-complete-old-new- testament-bible-study
This also comes with a workbook to be used in a group Bible Study. The folks at the Gettysburg Church really enjoyed this book. It gives you the breakdown of the author, the audience, and the reason that each book of the Bible was written. It also shows how each of the 66 books tie together to form the bible. This book can also be bought on Amazon.
I hope these suggestions will help you get started on the blessing of going deeper into the Scriptures.
